Hilarity and absurdity---along with mordant wit---abound in Online Dating: a Memoir , Billy McCoy's controversial novel, which tells the story of delusional Peyton Cresap's devouring and doomed passion for online dating. Online Dating: a Memoir is also the story of a quintessentially alienated man colliding with a cheerful world which he cannot accept. A seductive meditation on Online Dating.
Based on a study using online ethnography as the major research method, this book explains why and how men in Hong Kong use QQ-an online instant messenger-to "chase" women in mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen. Chasing women through QQ is a reciprocal exchange process during which the resources to be exchanged in the interaction are not negotiated. Rather, the men provide resources to the women, hoping for rewards in return that are not guaranteed. This characteristic of the exchange makes men who chase women through QQ very strategic in their action. They try to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs by adopting myriad strategies, such as constructing an attractive online identity by strategic self-presentation. The role of emotions in the exchange process is also examined. Men learn the emotional norms through the online forum, but sometimes it is difficult for them to control their emotions; some men fall in love when they are not supposed to. As it happens, they have failed to calculate the costs and rewards rationally in that they may provide too many resources to the women without getting enough rewards in return.
This book provides original insights into the thought processes, motivations, desires, anxieties and risks of Hong Kong men seeking short-term sexual relations with women on the mainland. These insights are highly relevant to our understanding of the quickly evolving use of social media, a phenomenon of worldwide importance and deep implications.
This book investigates the extent to which a Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) ethos has been extended to the online world in Europe. It examines the most significant policy initiatives carried out by PSBs in Europe on online platforms, and analyzes how the public service philosophy is being reinvented by policy makers.
The book explores the relationship between the Common Law and Shari'ah in both a historical and modern context. The book looks at the accommodation of Shari'ah Law within Common Law legal traditions and the role of the judiciary in drawing boundaries for secular democratic states with Muslim populations who want resolutions to conflicts that comply with the dictates of their faith whether through judicial oversight of private ordering of disputes such as faith based arbitration or the regulation of the public domain such as the criminal law.
Salim Farrar and Ghena Krayem consider the question of recognition of Shari'ah by looking at how the flexibilities that exists in both the Common law and Shari'ah provide unexplored avenues for navigation and accommodation. The issue is explored in a comparative context across several jurisdictions and case law is examined from selected jurisdictions with significant Muslim minority populations including: Australia, Canada, England and Wales, Singapore and the United States. The book examines how Muslims have framed their own claims for recognition and how Common Law judiciaries have responded within their constitutional and statutory confines and also within the contemporary contexts of demands for equality and universal human rights. Acknowledging the inherent pragmatism of the Common Law and its history of adapting to changing societal circumstances and conditions the book demonstrates that the controversial issue of accommodation of Shari'ah is not necessarily one that requires the establishment of a separate and parallel legal system.
