Based on a study using online ethnography as the major research method, this book explains why and how men in Hong Kong use QQ-an online instant messenger-to "chase" women in mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen. Chasing women through QQ is a reciprocal exchange process during which the resources to be exchanged in the interaction are not negotiated. Rather, the men provide resources to the women, hoping for rewards in return that are not guaranteed. This characteristic of the exchange makes men who chase women through QQ very strategic in their action. They try to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs by adopting myriad strategies, such as constructing an attractive online identity by strategic self-presentation. The role of emotions in the exchange process is also examined. Men learn the emotional norms through the online forum, but sometimes it is difficult for them to control their emotions; some men fall in love when they are not supposed to. As it happens, they have failed to calculate the costs and rewards rationally in that they may provide too many resources to the women without getting enough rewards in return.
This book provides original insights into the thought processes, motivations, desires, anxieties and risks of Hong Kong men seeking short-term sexual relations with women on the mainland. These insights are highly relevant to our understanding of the quickly evolving use of social media, a phenomenon of worldwide importance and deep implications.
Hilarity and absurdity---along with mordant wit---abound in Online Dating: a Memoir , Billy McCoy's controversial novel, which tells the story of delusional Peyton Cresap's devouring and doomed passion for online dating. Online Dating: a Memoir is also the story of a quintessentially alienated man colliding with a cheerful world which he cannot accept. A seductive meditation on Online Dating.
15 Days of Online Dating, an Old Woman's Mystifying Experience. Seventy-four years old Maian has been bored with her life in general and she is lonely and depressed. She lived in Canada and then the US since she was 28; she is practically an American now. She does not watch Chinese TV and she is at odds with the other old Chinese women. The Caucasians and African Americans she meets usually assume that she speaks minimal English. They would only talk to her when it's necessary and with either patronizing or condescending manners. Last December, her elder daughter sent her money instead of a gift. Her younger daughter suggested that she use this extra money on an online dating site. She said, "Take it as a gamble. It will cost no more than a day at a casino. You may find an old man who likes to read and write, and who definitely will have plenty of time to read the stories you wrote. Who knows, maybe even a late-blooming romance." The site they agreed on was not a "free" one and not a local one. They thought that if someone had to pay to get on the site, they could not be too bad. Maian paid for a one-month subscription and she had a mystifying experience for 15 days of online dating. She writes this book which includes stories of her Chinese childhood and background.
This book is mostly concerned on the experimental research of the nonlinear optical characteristics of various media, low- and high-order harmonic generation in different materials, and formation, and nonlinear optical characterization of clusters. We also demonstrate the inter-connection between these areas of nonlinear optics.
Do you like watching or reading about people making fools out of themselves? If there was a car wreck on the road, would you slow down to watch? If you are the type of person who enjoys a good laugh at the expense of someone else, then this is the book for you. I decided to see what it would be like to have no standards when meeting women off the internet. I met many and had some great times and some horrible times. I met some real interesting women and some real nasty women. I had many new experiences and lots of the same experiences. I cherry picked a few of my experiences and put them into this book. These are some of my worst experiences. You will laugh, you will empathize for me and you will probably wonder how I could have possibly done some of the things I did. I made mistakes, lots and lots of mistakes. I learned many lessons and grew as a person. Read about those mistakes and have a good laugh at my expense. Who knows, you might learn a lesson or two in the process.
